The Five Core Principles

Every reflection response in the Thirteen Tools course — whether written or recorded as video — is evaluated by AI against these five principles. Each principle is scored 0–4, for a maximum total of 20 points. This page is available to all staff at any time.

1 / 5

Communication & Collaboration

How clearly and effectively the response communicates ideas, and how well it demonstrates openness to collaboration, seeking input, and building shared understanding with others.

Scoring Levels (0–4)

0

Not Demonstrated

Response is unclear, disorganized, or shows no awareness of collaboration or others' perspectives.

1

Emerging

Ideas are partially communicated but lack clarity or structure; little to no mention of collaboration.

2

Developing

Ideas are communicated adequately; some acknowledgment of working with others or seeking input.

3

Proficient

Ideas are clear and well-organized; response demonstrates genuine understanding of collaboration and considers others' perspectives.

4

Exemplary

Communication is compelling and precise; response deeply integrates collaboration, actively seeks diverse perspectives, and builds shared understanding.

2 / 5

Peeling Back the Layers

Whether the response goes beyond surface-level observations to explore root causes, underlying motivations, and deeper context. Demonstrates curiosity and a willingness to dig beneath the obvious.

Scoring Levels (0–4)

0

Not Demonstrated

Response stays entirely at the surface; no exploration of causes, context, or meaning.

1

Emerging

Response identifies a surface-level issue but does not explore deeper causes or context.

2

Developing

Response begins to explore underlying factors but stops short of root causes or deeper analysis.

3

Proficient

Response digs beneath the surface to identify root causes and underlying motivations with clear reasoning.

4

Exemplary

Response demonstrates exceptional depth — peeling back multiple layers, connecting root causes to broader patterns, and surfacing insights others would miss.

3 / 5

Not Stepping Over the Little Things

Whether the response pays attention to small details, nuances, and seemingly minor issues that others might overlook. Recognizes that small things matter and that sweeping problems under the rug causes harm.

Scoring Levels (0–4)

0

Not Demonstrated

Response glosses over or ignores details entirely; focuses only on the big picture.

1

Emerging

Response acknowledges a detail but quickly moves past it without reflection.

2

Developing

Response notices some small details and gives them brief consideration.

3

Proficient

Response carefully attends to small details and nuances, explaining why they matter and should not be overlooked.

4

Exemplary

Response demonstrates exceptional attentiveness — identifying subtle details others would step over, connecting them to larger patterns, and treating nothing as too small to matter.

4 / 5

Consumers First

Whether the response centers the needs, dignity, and humanity of the people being served. Prioritizes the person asking for help above process, policy, convenience, or organizational efficiency.

Scoring Levels (0–4)

0

Not Demonstrated

Response focuses on process, policy, or organizational needs with no regard for the person being served.

1

Emerging

Response mentions the person but prioritizes process or convenience over their needs.

2

Developing

Response considers the person's needs but balances them against organizational convenience, sometimes putting process first.

3

Proficient

Response consistently centers the person's dignity and needs, ensuring that process serves the person — not the other way around.

4

Exemplary

Response places the person at the absolute center of every consideration, demonstrating deep empathy, and shows how every decision should start with the person asking for help.

5 / 5

Break the Mold

Whether the response challenges conventional thinking, proposes innovative approaches, or demonstrates willingness to do things differently when the situation calls for it. Shows courage to question 'the way things have always been done.'

Scoring Levels (0–4)

0

Not Demonstrated

Response defaults to the status quo with no questioning of existing approaches.

1

Emerging

Response acknowledges that things could be different but does not propose alternatives.

2

Developing

Response suggests a minor change but largely stays within conventional boundaries.

3

Proficient

Response thoughtfully challenges conventional thinking and proposes a meaningful alternative approach grounded in reasoning.

4

Exemplary

Response demonstrates bold, original thinking — challenging assumptions, proposing innovative approaches, and showing the courage to fundamentally rethink how things are done.
